When I first started thinking about creating a book blog, my idea centered around a virtual book club where anyone who is passionate about reading and talking about books could join. The past six months, I have focused on creating content for my blog, as well as reading, reading, and some more reading. I want to try and get a virtual book club up and running, focusing on a different genre every month and offering two choices that readers can vote on. This can be a completely optional book club where you can join during months where the choices intrigue you. The goal and purpose of the book club is to meet other book lovers and read books you might not normally have gravitated towards.

For July 2019, I wanted to start with the fiction genre and offer two choices that are thought provoking books, as well as books that are not new releases, so you can easily find them at your local public library. Get creative with how you want to read, audiobooks are an amazing choice if you don't have the time to sit down and read. Most public libraries partner with an app that allows you to download audiobooks for free. You can always purchase the book in digital or paper format, or check it out from the library. Both have been published long enough that you should not have to grapple with any long library hold lists. If you choose to purchase a copy, I have linked Amazon links to the titles below. Simply click the title, add it to your Amazon cart, and hit the order button. Both titles are currently for sale on Amazon for under $10, such a steal!

This is an open minded and casual book club, no judgement here, and no pressure!

Below are the July 2019 choices. Please vote in the comments below:

Genre: Fiction

Choices:

Synopsis:

So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos. A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

Topics: family relationships and dynamics, death

This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel

Synopsis:

This is how a family keeps a secret…and how that secret ends up keeping them. This is how a family lives happily ever after…until happily ever after becomes complicated. This is how children change…and then change the world. This is Claude. He’s five years old, the youngest of five brothers, and loves peanut butter sandwiches. He also loves wearing a dress, and dreams of being a princess. When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl. Rosie and Penn want Claude to be whoever Claude wants to be. They’re just not sure they’re ready to share that with the world. Soon the entire family is keeping Claude’s secret. Until one day it explodes. This Is How It Always Is, is a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it’s about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again, parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts, children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don’t get to keep them forever.

Topics: transgender/LGBTQ, family dynamics, social pressures

Both of these options will generate great conversation about relevant topics and social issues. Please vote on your choice in the comments below and I will announce the July 2019 RRBC book choice. I will create discussion questions and we will have an Instagram chat at the end of the month. Happy reading!
