What I read in November & December

Life has been very busy the last couple of months, so I haven't had time to do full blog reviews for most of the books I have read. You can find more detailed reviews on my Instagram page, but I will leave you here with one sentence reviews and my overall thought: Liked, Loved or Just Okay.

The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

Give me Give me more, give me more, because I loved all of what Britney brought to the table with her scathing memoir about life in under the spotlight, her conservatorship and the dark side of fame. LOVED.

Minor Detail by Adania Shibli

A Palestinian girl is murdered by Israeli soldiers and the history of her life and death has a profound impact on a woman born exactly 25 years later. LIKED. (Must read for education on the Nakba and life as a Palestinian living in occupation.)

The Celebrants by Steven Rowley

A group of college friends vow to hold 'living funerals' when they each hit a hard point in life, in order to show each other how much they love them and how much impact their life has. LOVED.

Evil Eye by Etaf Rum

A Palestinian-American woman struggles with her life as a wife, mother, and daughter to first-generation immigrants while she battles generational trauma, depression and a loss of identity. LIKED. (Important read to understand the Palestinian perspective.)

The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni

Sam Hell is shunned among his peers because of his unique genetic disorder that colors his eyes red, but as an adult, his life comes full circle when he faces a childhood adversary. LIKED.

Shark Heart by Emily Habeck

After a mutation diagnosis, a wife navigates life as her husband slowly transforms into a great white shark. LOVED. (Trust me.)

The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride

A body is found at the bottom of an old abandoned well in the Chicken Hill neighborhood where people from several walks of life come together. LIKED.

The Round House by Louise Erdrich

A young indigenous boy's mother is brutally sexually assaulted, and the perpetrator has not been found, while there are also questions of jurisdiction and fundamental issues with state and federal law when it pertains to assault against indigenous women. LOVED.

The Rachel Incident by Caroline O'Donoghue

Two young Irish college co-eds are living their lives in the moment, trying to figure out their place in the world, and realizing that the sun doesn't rise and set around them. LOVED.

The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

An NYC apartment has magical properties that take it back in time seven years, where Clementine, who inherited the apartment from her late aunt, meets a man who she cannot stop thinking about. Just okay-LIKED.

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

Combination historical fiction and thriller and set in a school based on the real-life hell known as the Dozier School for Boys, a young boy is fighting for his life while his sister tries to find a way to break him out. LOVED.

Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth

Three adopted sisters find themselves drawn together as adults when a dead body is found buried underneath the hellish home of their foster mother. LIKED.

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

Old money and a huge mansion makes for messy rich people shenanigans told from the perspective of the late heiress' adopted son and letters she wrote before she passed away. Just okay-LIKED.
