Well, this was a fun YA mystery that kept me guessing until the end. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson is a popcorn thriller with a feisty teenage protagonist, Pip, who is quirky, tenacious, and lovable. For Pip's capstone project, she decides to solve a murder. Andie Bell's case was open and shut five years ago. Her boyfriend, Sal Singh murdered her. He was found to have committed suicide after sending a text message admitting to the murder. Open and shut case, no questions asked. Pip isn't so sure Sal murdered Andie and her school project turns into much more than just a research paper.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is fast paced and fun to read. The chapters alternate between narrating the story from a third person perspective, to reading Pip's research and interview notes from her project. This is one of those murder mystery novels that keeps you guessing, but is easy enough to read on a Friday evening with a glass of red wine in hand. I have been dabbling in the YA genre lately and have found that it is nice to mix them in between some of the heavier reads I have been into lately. Pip is not your typical high school student, which makes her all the more fun to get to know. I love the concept that this quirky teenager cracks a case that police couldn't solve years prior. The reader roots for Pip throughout her project/armchair sleuth investigation.
I highly recommend this book to mystery/suspense lovers, no matter if you are or aren't typically a YA reader. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is a fast paced read with unpredictable plot twists.
