I had a bit of FOMO after seeing rave reviews for Anywhere You Run by Wanda M. Morris. I went in a bit blind and was under the assumption this was a thriller. It is more of a suspenseful historical fiction set in the Jim Crow deep south. The Richard sisters may seem like polar opposites, but they are fierce and willing to do anything to get the life they deserve.
Synopsis:
Set in the summer of 1964 in the deep south, sisters Violet and Marigold Richards are both fleeing something bit. Violet is on the run for murdering a man who assaulted her, and Marigold is running from society’s judgements and the police on Violet’s trail. Both sisters find a man hot on their trail that brings their stories to a head.
Review:
Anywhere You Run is told from multiple character perspectives, including Violet, Marigold and the man chasing them. The reader is immediately thrown into the plot as Violet exacts her revenge on her attacker and immediately escapes town, leaving her sister a short note without her whereabouts. As the story progresses, the suspense tightens around Marigold with her own circumstances to deal with, coupled with the police and a strange man searching for Violet. The elements of Jim Crow and racism in the mid 1960’s added texture and realism to the plot. I could imagine this exact scenario happening, which made it all the more suspenseful.
I think going into this book with different expectations was completely ok, because I ended up enrapt in the story and really enjoyed it. As the cover judger I am, I wasn’t drawn to this book until I saw all of the reviews. I still stand by my opinion that the girls on the cover look like a young Kourtney Kardashian. But don’t let the cover fool you, this book is a suspenseful chase story with redemptive qualities that felt like poetic justice for Violet and Marigold.
