With the multitude of new releases that come out each year, coupled with the years and years of amazing backlist books, it is overwhelming at times. I often find myself with the desire to read a large stack of books, yet I need to narrow down to picking one that I can focus on. Like the saying, "eyes are bigger than your stomach," I find myself like that with books. I want to devour them all, but I need to reign it in and accept the fact that I won't be able to get to them all. Check out my recent library haul. Each book is an absolute knock out. Here's my dilemma:
So how do you decide on what to read next?
I use a time limit trick to determine what my next read is when I am debating between several choices. It gives me a taste for each book, then forces me to decide.
Try these steps the next time you are debating on your next read.
Create a stack of books you want to read (could be two, could be ten-don't let the number intimidate you.)
Set aside time in your day to dedicate to reading, at least 15 minutes per book. (Example: you have four books on your stack, set aside at least one hour.)
Set a timer for 15 minutes and start reading one of your chosen books.
When the timer goes off, choose another book to read for 15 minutes. Keep going until you have read each book for 15 minutes.
When you have read each book, reflect on which one you are drawn to. Which book did you not want to stop reading when the timer went off?
Once decide, you will have your current read. Happy reading!
