Thank you Atria Books for the gifted copy of Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis, in exchange for an honest review. #partner

Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis is just plain adorable. You get that impression even from just looking at the cover. I expected a light hearted British love story, but what I got had more depth than I expected. Emmie Blue just turned 30, her best friend, Lucas (who she has a massive crush on) is getting married, and he just asked her to be his best woman in his wedding. She should be settled down by now, not working a dead end job at a hotel, renting a room from an elderly woman's house, pining after an unattainable guy. Everyone is doing something with their lives, except for her. At least, that's how Emmie feels.

Emmie first met Lucas by chance when they were sixteen. She wrote a note, tied it to a balloon, and watched it sail off. Lucas happened to find the balloon over 100 miles away and wrote back to Emmie. They have been best friends ever since. Emmie thought over the years that their serendipitous meeting meant they were destined to be together, but things do not seem to be leaning that way.

Dear Emmie Blue is not your typical love story, which is what I enjoyed about it. I tend to shy away from romance reads because I find them cheesy and lacking depth, but this one was more robust. Emmie is a complex character, which I appreciate about her, and I loved the unpredictability of her love story. It is a cute plot line, with well developed characters, and an air of maturity that is often lacking in romance novels. I loved the concept of fate, destiny, and how everything happens for a reason, even if that reason is not obvious in the moment.

I recommend this for those who were fans of The Girl He Used to Know, In Five Years, and One Day in December. Interested in picking up a copy? Click any of the title links in this post or the link below to get your copy today.

Happy reading!
