Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson has been on my TBR list for awhile. Tina at TBRetc. recommended it and her reviews have never strayed me wrong. This slow burning domestic suspense kept me intrigued up until the bitter end. While not the best book I have read all year, it kept me entertained and was well worth the read.
The main protagonist, Amy Whey, is an ordinary suburban mother. She has an infant son, a teenage stepdaughter, a happy marriage, and neighborhood friends that meet regularly for book club. During one book club night, a new neighbor makes an appearance and starts an innocent game of "never have I ever" that turns into intimate questions that begin to unravel Amy's secret past.
Never Have I Ever gave me The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager and Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty vibes. Centered around a childhood game that turns dark, this story unfolds bit by bit, with enough suspense to keep you turning the pages. The added appearance that Amy portrays to her neighbors is a similar suspense to Big Little Lies. Amy comes off as an ordinary mother of two, but her new neighbor brings out the dark side in her and I was all for it. She is no push over and stands her ground, but you will be changing your opinion of her ever step of the way.
Overall, Never Have I Ever is a solid ★★★★read. The story has cliffhangers and twists, nothing extremely shocking or thriller-like, but suspenseful all the same. I was entertained enough to finish it and recommend it if you liked The Last Time I Lied and Big Little Lies.
