One Day in December by Josie Silver is a fateful love story about the power of time and love. Laurie (a.k.a. Lu) is a smart girl who keeps her head down, puts in the work, and hopes one day the tables will turn for her in her career and love life. One evening in December, while taking the bus home from work, she spots a man at a bus stop. They catch each other's eyes and feel an instant and surreal connection. As quickly as the feeling comes, the bus is moving along it's route, and these two lovers are left wondering about each other and what the meaning of that feeling was. Laurie spends the next year pining over this mystery man with her roommate and best friend, Sarah. Almost a year to the day of seeing him, she sees him again. Except this time he is being introduced to her by Sarah as her current boyfriend, Jack. As luck would have it, Laurie finally lays eyes on him, but not in the way she had hoped for. Laurie and Jack get to know each other as friends, but the intense feelings linger and resurface throughout the years.
This book was the My Night's Book Clubbed choice for December. While I am not typically a romance reader, I enjoyed this love story and found myself emotional at the end. I loved the concept of star crossed lovers whose timing never quite seemed to line up. I felt for each of them during different points in their lives and rooted for them both at the end. What shys me away from reading anything in the romance genre is the cheesiness that some of these books have. I feel like it is unavoidable to have atleast a one or two cliché love plotlines in a romance novel, so I can cut this one some slack. One Day in December had moments that were a bit on the cheesy side (think a nice sharp cheddar, so goes well with anything and is more tolerable than a stinky blue cheese) ☺ But overall, the story was sweet and endearing.
My rating for One Day in December by Josie Silver is ★★★★ and I recommend reading it in December (just as the title says 😉.) The characters were likable and the love story was adorable. You cannot help but root for Laurie and Jack. This was a perfect contemporary romance pick for a book club discussion and generate a great discussion.
