A couple of years ago, my best friend and I started an annual vision board tradition. We make a date of getting together in January, with a stack of magazines, glue sticks and scissors, and of course a glass of wine (or two.) It has been one of my favorite times of the year and a tradition we both treasure.
Vision boards can be daunting, especially if you search them in Pinterest. (I highly recommend you DO NOT do that because you will get overwhelmed with all the possibilities out there. Pinterest, I love you, but I also feel like it sets me up for failure because I get all these unrealistic expectations and start comparing my work to these amazing, aesthetically pleasing photos on Pinterest.) The thing with vision boards is that they are all about YOU. There is no right or wrong way to make one. You can have yours solely be pictures, or just words, or no magazine clips and just handwriting. It can be whatever you want it to be, as long as it is a visual representation of what you want to accomplish in the upcoming year. Don't limit yourself to just professional or fitness goals, include goals for mental health, relationships, hobbies, home-life, self care, inspiring quotes, etc. Go big and go all in.
We are on our third year of doing this and it always feel like we are off to a slow start, but once you get going, it somehow pulls itself together. Set zero expectations and zero limits and see what your vision board becomes. When you are finished, hang in a special spot that you will see everyday. You want to see your goals and keep them in the back of your mind as you go about each day. The power of manifestation is real and I am a huge believer. I can honestly say, that for my 2019 vision board, I accomplished almost everything I put on there! For 2020, I can't say that, but hey, none of us knew that months later a pandemic would through all of our goals off track. For 2021, I am excited to see what my mind pulls together and what the year holds.
Here are some tips and essentials to get for your vision board date:
Tools you need: magazines (any kind and the more the better), glue sticks, tag board/poster board, stickers/markers/anything fun to jazz up your board, a beverage (wine, tea, coffee, beer, whatever!)
Tip: Look through each magazine multiple times. You might find something inspiring in one that gets your mind going down a different track and by looking through each multiple times, you will catch things you missed.
Tip: Don't feel like you need to fill the entire space. As you can see, my 2020 board is more bare than my 2019 board. I felt weird at first and that I should find more things to fill the blank spaces, but nothing else was calling out to me when I scanned our magazines. After reflecting on it, I truly think these blank spaces are healthy and more than okay. Oftentimes, we always try to fill every minute of our day and to me, these blank spaces were a reminder for me to slow down and be present in my life.
Tip: Have fun!!!
