I have been a huge Lisa Jewell fan since I first listened to Then She Was Gone on audio. I quickly fell in love with her style of writing. She has a way with writing thrillers with unreliable narrators that lead the reader astray and wrapping the stories up with an unexpected twist. Watching You is not different and kept me turning the pages to unravel the mystery.
Watching You by Lisa Jewell is about a small, English village with beautiful cookie-cutter homes and the secrets they contain behind closed doors. Prominent people, such as lawyers, doctors, and academic professionals reside in this quaint town and one would never suspect that one of their residents would wind up dead in their home. But that is exactly what happened.....
Tom Fitzgerald is one of the residents, who resides with his wife and son, who happens to have an obsession with observing their neighbors from his bedroom window. Tom's neighbor, Joey Mullen, becomes infatuated with him and pines after this unavailable older man. Another resident, Jenna Tripp, is a student at the school that Tom administers and comes to have a strange inclination about this mysterious older man. All of these stories unravel and meld together to uncover who was murdered, who did it, and why.
Lisa Jewell is fabulous at character development and creating characters with strange and almost perverse inclinations. Her characters are so much fun to read about and get to know. While I read Watching You, I was completely intrigued with Tom and Joey's story line, with this budding hidden romance and intense sexual attraction. On the other hand, Tom's son had similar obsessions with Joey, as well as Jenna and other people in the neighborhood. Each chapter alternated between each character and included excerpts of the criminal investigation into the murder, from which one of the main characters is accused of the murder.
Watching You by Lisa Jewell was a fun, fast paced thriller that kept me guessing until about 3/4 of the way through. I read it quickly, so I was able to pick up on some of the clues that were dropped along the way. I thoroughly enjoy her writing style and she brings a depth that thrillers can sometimes lack. I highly recommend this one if you have enjoyed any of her other books or if you are a fan of thrillers with unreliable narrators, multiple perspectives, and dark psychological aspects. I gave Watching You a solid ★★★★ review.
